Mastodons Never Trail In 84-73 Win At North Dakota
12/29/2018 4:08:00 PM | Men's Basketball
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Summit League opener was worth the wait as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons earned an 84-73 victory at North Dakota on Saturday (Dec. 29) afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The game was delayed a day due to a blizzard in North Dakota.
The Mastodons came out anything but cold, taking a 6-0 lead from tip. It was a 23-20 lead when the 'Dons went on a 11-0 run. Four different Mastodons scored in the nearly three-minute stretch. It put Purdue Fort Wayne up 34-20 with 5:20 left in the half. A trey by Matt Holba, assisted by Matt Weir, was the punctuation mark on the push. The 'Dons extended their lead to 16 at 46-30 on a John Konchar layup to close the first half. Kason Harrell had 16 points and was 7-of-9 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
The closest the Fighting Hawks would get in the second half would be six points. It was a 67-61 game with 5:07 left when the 'Dons called for time. Out of the break Dylan Carl found Harrell in the lane for a layup.
Five Mastodons finished in double-digits. Harrell had 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Konchar totaled his 43rd career double-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. He has seven double-doubles in the last eight games. All eight of Konchar's points in the second half came from the free throw line.
Holba had 13 points making all three of his attempts from long range. Dylan Carl filled up the box score with 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Dee Montgomery pitched in 10 points.
The 'Dons shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the floor and limited North Dakota to 38.8 percent (26-of-67). Purdue Fort Wayne connected on 16-of-18 from the free throw line going 15-of-16 in the second half.
Purdue Fort Wayne had a 38-24 points in the paint advantage.
The Mastodons are now 9-7 (1-0 Summit League). North Dakota falls to 6-8 (0-1 Summit League). The 'Dons are back in action tomorrow (Dec. 30) at North Dakota State.
