2/24/2018 11:33:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
QUINCY, Ill. - Behind career-dig nights from Michael Keegan and Kolbie Knorr, No. 15 Fort Wayne came away with a 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-9) victory over the Quincy Hawks on Saturday (Feb. 24) in the Pepsi Arena.
Knorr came to play against his former teammates, as he had a career-high 21 digs, just two short of the program record. He had four digs in the opening set, partnering with Keegan's five to hold Quincy to a .000 hitting percentage. A four-point run by the Mastodons extended the score to 13-8, a lead that the Hawks would not gain back. Colton Stone had four of his 16 kills in the opening set.
Fort Wayne held the Hawks to -.031 in the second set, but the 'Dons could not find enough offense to take the 2-0 lead. The Blue and White had five straight points to even the score at 17 and force two timeouts, but QU went on a 6-1 run. Fort Wayne responded with four straight to go to 23-22, but Quincy took two of the last three to go even at one set each at the break. Pelegrin Vargas had five kills to lead the 'Dons in the second.
Six digs from Keegan in the third helped hold the Hawks to .037 hitting. Quincy tied the score at 10 after four straight, but after the Mastodons took a timeout, an 8-2 ensued. This included three straight service aces from Vargas. The offense was evenly spread across the 'Dons, as three players had three kills each.
Quincy had its best offensive set in the fourth, hitting .323. Despite two separate four-point runs, the Hawks took the set due to runs of their own. Five straight and three straight put the set out of reach. Vargas had six of his 17 kills in the fourth.
In the fifth, the 'Dons jumped out to a 7-4 lead behind three straight, then moved it to 12-7 after four more. Fort Wayne took three of the last four to walk away with the win. Knorr had seven digs in the shortened final set.
Keegan and Vargas finished with double-doubles of 42 assists/18 digs and 17 kills/11 digs respectively. Austin Gerwig had 10 kills and seven digs.
Fort Wayne improves to 11-4, 3-3 MIVA, while Quincy falls to 8-9, 0-7 MIVA. The Mastodons return home for a pair of nonconference matchups against Alderson Broaddus and Loras on Friday and Saturday (March 2-3) on Arnie Ball Court.
