UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 15 Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell in four sets (30-28, 19-25, 29-27, 25-15) to the No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday (Feb. 3) in Rec Hall.
The Mastodons and Nittany Lions went toe-to-toe in the first set, as the 'Dons opened up an 11-6 lead before a Penn State timeout. PSU went on a four-point run to bring it within one, and the rest of the set went back and forth. Penn State would not have a lead larger than two for the rest of the set. The Mastodons had three set point opportunities, but could not capitalize, and PSU had two kills in a row to end the set. Pelegrin Vargas had eight kills in the first set.
Fort Wayne went up five at 15-10 in the second set after a four-point run that included back-to-back service aces from Colton Stone. The lead ballooned to as many as eight when the Mastodons led 23-15. Fort Wayne hit .409 for the set, while holding the Nittany Lions to .222, their worst hitting set of the afternoon.
The entire third set was close, as neither team led by more than three points. The 'Dons had three set points, but the Nittany Lions ended the set on a kill and service ace. Stone had six kills on 11 attempts in the set.
The 'Dons were held to .077 in the final set of the night, and Penn State rattled off six straight points to open up a 20-11 lead. Fort Wayne could not overcome this deficit, and dropped the match in front of a standing-room-only crowd.
Michael Keegan ended the night with another double-double (40 assists, 11 digs), which is his second in a row. He had four double-doubles in a row last season, which tied the longest streak in program history. Kolbie Knorr added eight digs for the 'Dons. Stone led the Fort Wayne with 14 kills, followed by Vargas with 13 and Tony Price with nine. Tomas Gago tied his career-high with eight kills on 11 attempts with no errors for a .727 percentage. Four Mastodons had at least three blocks. Gago had four assists and a solo, Vargas and Keegan had four block assists and Diedrich had three.
