Bird Sweeps First Day of Match Play Challenge

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. - Paige Bird picked up a pair of victories to lead the Fort Wayne women's golf team during the first day of the Women's Mid American Match Play Challenge. The Mastodons fell to both No. 5 seed Western Michigan and No. 11 seed Central Michigan, 3-2.
Hosted by Bowling Green at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, the par-72 course is being played at 6,068 yards.
In the morning match, the 'Dons nearly knocked off the fifth seeded Broncos. Fort Wayne earned a decisive victory from Bird in the No. 5 matchup, defeating Cameryn Lucia 6&4. Monica Dorner also won her match at the second pairings, defeating Claire Hernandez 2&1. Madison Chesnutt fell 8&6 in the top pairing, while at the No. 3 position Jenna Kurosky fell 4&3. The No. 4 pairing was all square heading to the 18th hole, but Abigail Carlsen was unable to pull out the victory, falling 1-up.
Fort Wayne picked up wins at the Nos. 1 and 5 positions in the afternoon match, but were unable pull out the victory. Bird won her second match of the day, defeating Danielle Sawyer 4&3. Chesnutt took home the victory on the final hole to win 1-up. Kurosky's match came down to the final hole, but she fell 1-up. Dorner and Carlson also fell in their final matches of the day 4&3.
The Mastodons tee off tomorrow, February 6, at 9 a.m. to face Dayton in the final match of the event.
