Strong Offensive Game Accelerates Fort Wayne Past Concordia

IRVINE, Calif. - Behind a .337 team hitting percentage on Saturday (March 10), Fort Wayne bested No. 14 Concordia Irvine in straight sets (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) in the CU Arena.
The Mastodons were led by Tony Price, who had 15 kills and no errors for a .625 clip. He had five kills in each of the three sets. The 'Dons never trailed in the first set after jumping out to an 8-1 lead behind eight straight serves from Pelegrin Vargas. This stretch included an ace. The lead ballooned to as many 10, which was the final differential. Vargas had four kills to couple Price's five. The Mastodons held the Eagles to .032 hitting in the first frame while hitting .321 themselves.
The Eagles took a 3-1 lead, but they did not lead by that many at any other point in the second frame. The last tie of the set came at 15-all, but the Mastodons rattled off a 10-7 run to open up a 2-0 lead. Tomas Gago had four kills to go along with Vargas and Price, who had five each.
Concordia's last lead of the last set came at just 3-2, after which five separate two-point runs and a three-point run paced Fort Wayne's scoring. Price led the set again with his five kills, rounding out his night. The 'Dons hit .400 in the final set while holding Concordia to .188. The Eagles did not block a ball in the final frame, and the Mastodons had five team blocks.
Defensively, Fort Wayne was paced by Colton Stone's nine digs, followed by Kolbie Knorr with eight, Vargas with seven, Michael Keegan with six, and Price with five. The Mastodons had 36 compared to CUI's 24 digs. Richie Diedrich led with five blocks, while also having five kills and a .714 hitting clip.
Keegan finished with 31 assists on 41 kills for the night. Stone had two aces, along with Price and Vargas who each had one. Vargas finished with 12 kills.
Fort Wayne improves to 15-5 on the year, while CUI falls to 9-10. This is Fort Wayne's second win over a ranked team this season, the first coming just three days earlier with a five-set win over No. 3 UC Irvine. The Mastodons return to the court with a pair of matches against Ball State on Wednesday and Saturday (March 14, 17), home and away.
