FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a blistering hitting night on Friday (March 30), No. 15 Fort Wayne topped Quincy 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) on Arnie Ball Court. The 'Dons hit .395 (41-11-76) for the match.
Quincy took an early lead to start the match, opening a 10-7 lead. Fort Wayne took three straight to even the score, but the Hawks then went on a 4-2 run. The 'Dons earned three of the last four points of the set thanks to three kills from three different players. The .333 hitting clip in the opening set was the lowest of the match.
Fort Wayne started its dominant second set with a 12-6 lead, but the Hawks earned four straight. Fort Wayne had a 10-4 run to lead by seven, but the Hawks stole two on set point opportunities. Michael Keegan had four kills on four attacks in the second frame to lead all Fort Wayne attackers. The 'Dons hit .435 while holding Quincy to .172.
Tomas Gago had his best set of the night in the final frame (6-0-7), to end his night 9-0-10 for a .900 clip. This percentage ties for third in the country this season when hitting 10-14 attempts. He also had three of his six blocks in the last set. The Mastodons took five straight points to push the lead to 18-13, forcing a Quincy timeout. The Hawks did not get within four points for the rest of the night. Fort Wayne hit .423 in the last set.
Keegan finished with four kills and 33 assists. Pelegrin Vargas and Tony Price both hit over .400, with 10-2-19 and 8-0-14 respectively. Price also had five blocks. Price, Vargas, Colton Stone and Kolbie Knorr divided the defensive efforts, all finishing with four digs. The 'Dons finished with nine team blocks, compared to the Hawks' four.
