NEWTON, Kan. - HISTORY! For the first time a Fort Wayne men's golfer captured the Summit League Championship, as Zach Schroeder claimed Championship MVP with a three-day score of 2-under-par 214. The victory means Schroeder will advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament at a site to be determined.
Schroeder finished the final day with a 3-under-par 69, the second lowest round by any golfer in the three-day tournament. He recorded five birdies on the final day to win the championship by five shots. Schroeder's five-stroke margin of victory is the largest by anyone since the 2003 tournament (also five strokes), which took place four years prior the Mastodons joining the Summit League.
Hosted at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course, the par-72 course was played at 6,733 yards. North Dakota State captured the team title with a 54-hole score of 893.
Fort Wayne carded its lowest round of tournament on the final day, finishing with a 297. As a team, the Mastodons finished in fifth place with a final score of 918, ahead of Western Illinois, Omaha, and South Dakota State.
Callahan Elzey turned in a top-10 performance, shooting a 76 on the round and finishing the week with 227 to tie for 10th. Josh Keating also carded a 76 during the final round to end the tournament in 36th place with a 54-hole score of 242. Finishing one-shot back in 37th place was Eric Brinker, shooting an 80 on the day. Zac Turi rounded out the scoring for the 'Dons with a 76 for the round and carding a three-day total of 245.
Schroeder will find out which of the six regional sites he will advance to during the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships selection announcement. The selection show will take place tomorrow, May 2, at 6 p.m. on Golf Channel, during Golf Central, and will also be streamed live on the Golf Channel website.
