Scouting the Mastodons (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Summit League)
Purdue Fort Wayne enters its matchup with Indiana State 0-1, after falling to Ball State 2-1 on Friday (Aug. 17). The Mastodons are led by freshman forward Kayla Wisniewski, who scored the goal against Ball State.
Scouting the Sycamores (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Missouri Valley Conference)
Indiana State comes to the Summit City with an 0-1 record, falling to Northern Kentucky 3-0. The Sycamores are led by preseason All-Missouri Valley forward Katie Wells. Wells scored two goals against the 'Dons in 2017.
When We Last Met
Last season, Indiana State took a 3-1 victory over the Mastodons thanks to two goals from Katie Wells, who returns as a senior. Jessica Schoenfeldt scored the lone goal for the 'Dons.
New Faces in the Summit City
Purdue Fort Wayne has five new faces joining the women's soccer program this season. Emily Gunsett and Lorah Pund join the squad as sophomores, while Kayla Wisniewski, Makenzie Coe and Emily Melchi come in as true freshmen. Pund and Melchi will vie for the starting goalkeeper spot with senior Haley Lydon and sophomore Emma Gaggioli. Wisniewski will fight for a spot on the front line, Coe for the midfield and Gunsett for defense.
Freshman Phenom
Freshman Kayla Wisniewski scored the only goal of the regular season so far for the Mastodons. She also scored three goals in the Mastodons' exhibition against Saint Francis (Ind.).
Defensive-Minded 'Dons
The Mastodons return four defenders from the 2017 that held nine different opponents scoreless in the first half of each respective contest.
Fleming is Fast
Paityn Fleming's goal against Denver (Oct. 27, 2017) was the fastest in Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer program history. She scored against the Pioneers just 28 seconds after the opening kick. Fleming surpassed former teammate Gaby Romo for the fastest goal, with Romo's 0:34 goal against IUPUI in 2016 serving as the record holder for just over one year.
Last Time Out
The Mastodons fell to Ball State 2-1 at Hefner Soccer Complex during a torrential downpour of rain. Freshman Kayla Wisniewski scored the goal for the 'Dons in the 70th minute. She also placed all three of her shots on goal.
Up Next
Purdue Fort Wayne will hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Western Michigan. Last season, the 'Dons and Broncos met in early September, when WMU took a 1-0 win.
