Mastodons Win Golden Flashes Classic, Rightnowar Named MVP

KENT, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team capped off its weekend by earning the title "Tournament Champions" as the Mastodons defeated Niagara 3-1 (25-21, 25-10, 21-25, 25-17) to win the Golden Flashes Classic.
For her performance during the tournament, Nicole Rightnowar was named the Golden Flashes Classic All-Tournament Team MVP. Elizabeth Fuerst and Madison Jaqua were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Offensively, the Mastodons had three players with double-digit kills. Rightnowar earned her fourth double-double of the season with a match-high 15 kills and two aces, and a team-high 13 digs. Fuerst finished with 14 kills and three blocks. Sydney Boerst added 10 kills and three blocks. Jaqua paced the offense with 47 assists to go along with 11 digs, for here third double-double of the year. Julia Wayer and Victoria Mills each had a season-high with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Trading multiple leads throughout the first set, the Mastodons used a 5-1 run late in the frame to earn the comeback win. It was all Purdue Fort Wayne in the second set, jumping out to a 9-1 lead, as the 'Dons held Niagara to its fewest points on the season. The Mastodons overcame an early deficit in the third set, but a 5-0 run by the Purple Eagles gave them back the lead for good. After early lead changes in the fourth, the Mastodons went on a 6-1 to regain a lead they would not relinquish.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns home to host Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, September 4 at 6 p.m.
