Mastodons and Eagles Go Hand in Hand During Day One

CHESTERTON, Ind. - Four different Purdue Fort Wayne men's golfers carded an eagle during the first day of the Crusader Collegiate, as the Mastodons sit in a tie for fourth place with a 36-hole score of 599. The 'Dons carded scores of 297 and 302 during the two rounds.
Hosted at the Sand Creek Country Club by Valparaiso, the par-72 course is being played at 6,972 yards. Bradley leads the team standings with a two-round score of 577. Devin Johnson from Loyola-Chicago and Dan Lensing of Bradley are tied atop the individual standings with a 3-under-par 141.
The four eagles on the day by the Mastodons were two more than any other team. The 'Dons are tied with Creighton and sit nine shots back of third place Loyola-Chicago. The Mastodons sit 16 shots better than Summit League rival Western Illinois, and 24 better than North Dakota.
Eric Brinker paced the Mastodons on the day with rounds of 74 and 75 to finish with a 149 and tie for 18th place. Brinker carded seven birdies, five coming in the second round, along with an eagle on par-5, No. 1. One shot back in a tie for 22nd are Clark Tiller and Callahan Elzey. Both golfers also eagled the 503-yard par-5 No. 1, as Tiller finished with four birdies and Elzey with three. Zach Schroeder ended the day tied for 32nd with rounds of 74-80-154. Schroeder recorded a pair of birdies during his first round. Two strokes back in a tie for 44th is Luke Miller, shooting scores of 80 and 76. He carded two birdies in each of his rounds.
Playing as an individual, Parker Deakyne shot scores of 79 and 80 to finish the day tied for 54th with a 159. Deakyne carded three birdies along with an eagle, which came on No. 15, a 576-yard par-5.
The final round of the Crusader Collegiate starts tomorrow, September 18, with tee-times beginning at 7:30 a.m. ET.
