FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's' volleyball team took care of business on its home court as the Mastodons defeated Western Illinois 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 25-16, 25-14), to begin Summit League play 2-0.
Elizabeth Fuerst hit a match-high .538 as she finished with 15 kills. Nicole Rightnowar also had 15 kills to go along with a match-high 13 digs to earn her ninth double-double of the season. Katie Crowe earned her sixth double-double as she had 13 kills, 12 digs, and tied a career-high with five blocks. Madison Jaqua also earned a double-double, her seventh of the year, as she led the way with a match-high 42 assists and added 10 digs.
The Mastodons got off to a slow start as the Leathernecks led early on. The 'Dons were able to get into a rhythm, going on a 9-2 run, to take the lead 15-13. WIU countered with a 5-1 run, giving them the lead for good. Western Illinois scored the opening point of the second set, but it was all Mastodons from there as they scored the next three points to take the set.
The Leathernecks again scores the opening point of the third, but the 'Dons bounced back and used a 6-1 run to their advantage to lead 9-6. WIU cut it to 11-10, but the Mastodons responded with six straight points to extend its lead for good. The 'Dons scored the first three points of the fourth and didn't relent, as they took the set and the match.
The Mastodons hit the road for the first time in Summit League play when they head to South Dakota for an 8 p.m. ET match on Friday, September 28.
