Women's Volleyball Sweeps Final Day of DePaul Invitational

CHICAGO - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team swept the final day of the DePaul Invitational to finish as the runner-up. The Mastodons defeated UConn 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 27-29, 25-14, 18-16), before taking down host DePaul 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 25-17).
In the first match against the Huskies, four Mastodons finished in double-digit kills, and two players earned a double-double. Nicole Rightnowar led the way 14 kills and 14 digs. Katie Crowe finished with 13 kills and a team-high 20 digs. Elizabeth Fuerst added 12 kills, while Sydney Boerst had 11 kills and seven blocks. Sandra Hoevels added nine kills and a match-high nine blocks.
Madison Jaqua led the offense, dishing out a match-high 52 assists to go along with nine digs. Elizabeth Britner finished the game with 14 digs, while Victoria Mills came up with 12.
Purdue Fort Wayne fell behind early in the first set, before surging ahead thanks to a 10- 1 advantage, which included six straight points. With the Mastodons lead 9-8 in the second, UConn scored the next five points. The 'Dons fought off three set points late in the frame, but were unable to pull ahead. With the score tied 5-5 in the third, the Mastodons jumped out in front thanks to a 4-1 run. The Huskies came back late in the set to tie it and force extra points. The Mastodons had multiple set points, but were unable to take the frame as UConn scored the final two points on a pair of miscues.
The Mastodons came out rumbling in the fourth set, taking the first point and blowing past the Huskies. The 'Dons eventually pushing its lead to double-digits, 19-7, as they forced the decisive fifth set. Back-and-forth the two teams went in the fifth set. Both sides had multiple match points, first for the Huskies and then the Mastodons. A service error by UConn followed by an attack attempt that went wide, gave Purdue Fort Wayne the set and the match.
In the final match of the weekend, Rightnowar led the Mastodons with 12 kills. Fuerst and Crowe each had nine kills. Jaqua dropped out a match-high 34 assists and Britner finished with a match-high 17 digs. Rightnowar, Crowe and Boerst each finished with three aces, as the Mastodons had 11 as a team.
The 'Dons jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on DePaul to begin the final match. The Blue Demons came back to take the lead midway through the set, but the Mastodons countered with a 6-1 advantage to retake the lead for good. DePaul held an early lead in the second set, but once again Purdue Fort Wayne came back scoring eight of the next 10 points. After a short Blue Demon lead, the Mastodons used a 6-2 stretch to take the lead for good.
In the third, the two teams traded several leads throughout the set. With the 'Dons leading 24-22, DePaul scored the final four points to take the set. The Blue Demons took the lead early on in the fourth, but after trailing 5-3, the Mastodons went on a 9-2 run to go out in front to take the match.
Crowe and Rightnowar were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Mastodons return to action September 14 and 15 for the RMU Sheraton Invitational.
