Richie Diedrich Named MIVA Defensive Player of the Week

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After a second straight 2-0 weekend, Purdue Fort Wayne junior Richie Diedrich picked up his first MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honor on Tuesday (Jan. 15).
Diedrich played four sets over the weekend at Lees-McRae and Queens, tallying one block in one set against the Bobcats and tying his career-high with eight blocks on the Royals' home floor. His night at Queens included two solo blocks and six block assists. His line for the weekend averaged out to 2.25 blocks per set. Thanks to Diedrich's blocking, the Mastodons held both opponents under .100 hitting for the weekend. The 'Dons held Lees-McRae to -.056 (17-20-54) and Queens to .012 (22-21-86).
After the Mastodons' 4-0 start, Diedrich is averaging 1.3 blocks per set, which is good for fifth in the country. He is also the only player in the nation to have eight blocks in a three-set match this season.
This is the third MIVA Player of the Week for Purdue Fort Wayne in this young 2019 season. Michael Keegan and Kolbie Knorr won the first week's offensive and defensive honors respectively.
Diedrich and the Mastodons started the season with four straight sweeps, which tied the program record set in 2018. The 'Dons return to Arnie Ball Court on Friday and Saturday for a pair of matches against No. 10 Cal State Northridge and No. 12 UC Santa Barbara.
