1/26/2019 6:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team earned its second win of Homecoming week, as the Mastodons defeated Denver 70-55 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26).
The Mastodon defense held Denver to 26.2% shooting on the night, their lowest total in almost four years (Feb. 7, 2015). For the afternoon, the 'Dons connected on 24-of-54 (44.4%) from the floor, 7-of-22 (31.8%) from beyond the arc, and 15-of-23 (65.2%) at the free throw line.
Hannah Albrecht led the 'Dons with a season-high 18 points, while setting a career-high with eight free throws made. Albrecht also finished with a season-high six rebounds to go along with a game-high four assists. Sh'Toya Sanders earned her first career double-double as a Mastodon with 10 points and 12 rebounds. De'Jour Young finished with 14 points for the 'Dons.
Jaelencia Williams swatted a career-high seven shots. Her seven blocks are tied for second most in program history, eclipsed only by Stephanie Rosado's eight blocks against Indiana Tech on Nov. 23, 2010.
The Mastodons jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring the first seven points of the game. The 'Dons extended their lead to 13-2 thanks to six straight points after Denver's first bucket. Purdue Fort Wayne ended the second quarter and began the third on an 11-0 run as the Mastodons extended their lead to 20 points. The lead looked to be secure for the 'Dons, but a 13-0 run by the Pioneers during a stretch of the fourth quarter cut the lead down to 10 with under three minutes to play, 61-51. The Mastodons ended the streak with 1:59 to go on a free throw, as the 'Dons would put the game away, connecting on eight of their nine free throw attempts to end the game.
