Women's Volleyball Tops Omaha in Five Sets

OMAHA, Neb. - Behind a trio of double-doubles from Katie Crowe (18 kills, 13 digs), Sidney Schiller (15 kills, 12 digs) and Madison Gates (28 assists, 12 digs) on Sunday (Oct. 13), Purdue Fort Wayne came away with a five-set victory at Omaha 25-22, 27-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-10.
The majority of the first set was back-and-fourth, but the Mastodons used a 5-1 run midway through to go up 14-9. After a 17-17 stymie, Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 4-1 push which included an ace from Sydney Boerst. Boerst also had the kill that finished the set. She was one of three 'Dons in double-digits for kills with 10.
The second set was even closer than the first, as the Mastodons largest lead was only four on two occasions. Omaha had a set point opportunity at 25-24, but Purdue Fort Wayne took the last three points on a kill from Schiller, a kill from Wurster and an attack error from Omaha.
Omaha took both the third and fourth sets in wire-to-wire fashion.
The Mastodons came back after losing sets three and four with a 5-2 start to the fifth, which included an ace from Maddi Nell. The 'Dons had a 3-0 push to go up 11-6 after a kill from Schiller, and had a set point chance after Rachael Crucis had the ace of the match at 14-9. Schiller had the kill from the right side that put the match to rest.
Crucis ended the afternoon with a match-high 26 digs. She finished the weekend with 44 total digs for 5.5 per set.
The Mastodons keep their hold on second place in the Summit League as they improve to 11-9, 5-1. Omaha falls to 10-10, 3-3. The 'Dons will continue the toughest stretch of their season, with the first of four straight road matches at South Dakota State on Friday (Oct. 18). South Dakota will play host to the 'Dons on the following Sunday (Oct. 20).
