Crowe and Crucis Lead 'Dons to Win at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Behind career nights from the reigning Summit League Players of the Week, Katie Crowe and Rachael Crucis, Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball defeated South Dakota State 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12) at Frost Arena.
Crowe finished Friday night (Oct. 18) with a career-high 28 kills and Crucis tied her career-high with 32 digs.
In the opening frame, Purdue Fort Wayne trailed 23-21, but went on a 4-0 run to end the set. Elizabeth Fuerst and Crowe had a kill each, and Sydney Boerst and Fuerst combined for a block on the final point. Crowe had seven kills in the opening set. SDSU took the second set by taking seven of the last eight points, despite a 5-1 push by the 'Dons to tie it up at 18.
The second set went to the 'Dons thanks to a 9-2 run by Purdue Fort Wayne to go up 13-7. Furthermore, the Mastodons took four of the last five points, including an ace from Maddi Nell on set point.
SDSU took the fourth after a late 6-2 run to go up 23-20. The Jackrabbits took two of the final three points with a kill and a solo block.
In the fifth, the 'Dons started up 4-1, as Crowe knocked in a pair of kills to force a Jackrabbit timeout. Purdue Fort Wayne went up 12-10 after a kill from Madelyn Wurster and a block from Crowe and Sandra Hoevels. Fuerst had the penultimate kill to go up 14-10, and Crowe had the kill that closed the book on the night at 15-12.
Wurster joined Crowe as the only other Mastodon in double-digit kills with 14. Crucis (32), Crowe (16), Sidney Schiller (16) and Nell (12) all reached double-digit digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 12-9, 6-1 Summit League, while SDSU moves to 5-14, 2-5. The Mastodons are back in action on Sunday at League-leading South Dakota (18-1, 7-0).
