Broom Alert: Mastodons Sweep North Dakota on Sunday
10/6/2019 4:43:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Behind a pair of double-doubles from Katie Crowe and Sidney Schiller, Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball swept North Dakota 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-22) on the Fighting Hawks home floor on Sunday (Oct. 6).
Crowe ended her day with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Schiller tallied 11 kills and 10 digs. Rachael Crucis also reached double-digit digs with 15.
The two outside hitters notched five kills each in the opening set. After going up 1-0, the 'Dons ran off a 9-2 start to the second set, which was capped off by a pair of kills from Madelyn Wurster. UND forced a timeout as they shrunk the Mastodon lead to two at 14-12, after which the 'Dons went on a 6-2 stretch. A second run by the Fighting Hawks left the 'Dons up by a pair again, but another timeout proved essential, as the 'Dons ran away with four of the last five points of the set. Crucis aced the Fighting Hawks to give the 'Dons the 25th point.
UND took an 7-6 lead early on, and even took a 20-16 lead, but Purdue Fort Wayne used a 9-2 run to leave Grand Forks with a W. A block from Schiller and Hoevels rattled the Fighting Hawks, forcing a trio of errors that gave the 'Dons the set and match.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 9-9, 3-1 Summit League, while North Dakota falls to 9-9, 1-3. The Mastodons will return home sitting in second place in the Summit League, behind just South Dakota, which is 4-0. Next, the 'Dons will welcome Oral Roberts, for their only home match in October on Friday the 11th.
