Sydney Boerst Shines in Sweep of South Dakota State
11/15/2019 9:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind Sydney Boerst's 11-0-14 Friday night (Nov. 15), Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball defeated South Dakota State 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) on the Arnie Ball Court.
Boerst's .786 hitting percentage for the match was set in motion from the opening serve, as she had four kills on five swings in the first set, including the first point of the match. The 'Dons went on a 10-3 push that included three Boerst kills and a Madison Gates ace. This run forced two SDSU timeouts, leaving them without a TO after the 17-13 mark. The Mastodons gutted out three of the last four points of the set after a timeout on kills from Sandra Hoevels, Madelyn Wurster and Sidney Schiller. The 'Dons hit .395 as a team for the set.
The second set was more of the Mastodons to start, as they took the first four points, with two kills (Boerst and Elizabeth Fuerst), a block (Boerst and Fuerst) and an ace (Gates). SDSU went on a 6-0 stretch to go up 10-7, but Purdue Fort Wayne answered with a 5-1 run of their own. A later 4-0 run by the 'Dons put them up 18-15, but SDSU went back up 19-18 just moments later. After the Jackrabbits took a 21-19 lead, Purdue Fort Wayne called a timeout that paved the way for six straight to end the set. Katie Crowe's service led the way to two kills by Wurster, a kill from Hoevels and a block by Schiller.
The 'Dons led the third set in wire-to-wire fashion, with Rachael Crucis picking up an ace in the opening rotation. The 'Dons held on to their lead the rest of the way, despite SDSU creeping as close as one at 11-10. Purdue Fort Wayne rattled off a 9-1 behind Crucis and Schiller ballooning the lead to 20-12. This gave the Mastodons enough cushion to come away with the win.
Crowe and Crucis led the defensive efforts, digging up 17 and 16 balls respectively. Fuerst had four blocks. Kendyll Gebert and Gates split the setting duties, totaling 23 and 20. Wurster was the second Mastodon in double-figure kills, as she slammed down 11 on 25 swings for .320 hitting clip.
The win moves Purdue Fort Wayne to 17-12, 11-4 Summit League, while SDSU falls to 6-21, 3-12 Summit League. The No. 2 seed for the Summit League Tournament is still in play for the Mastodons heading into the final match of the regular season. A win over South Dakota on Sunday and a Denver loss to either Omaha or Western Illinois will allow the Mastodons to leap-frog the Pioneers in the seeding process. The 'Dons will face their final test with South Dakota on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The three seniors that will be honored are Je'Bria Green, Fuerst and Hoevels. The 'Dons will also recognize Madeline Dean, as she is in her second and final season with the Mastodons through the Team IMPACT program.
