Mastodons Drop Senior Day Contest to South Dakota

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball dropped its final regular season contest as a member of the Summit League on Sunday (Nov. 17), as South Dakota took a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-19) win over the Mastodons on Arnie Ball Court.
Purdue Fort Wayne honored its three seniors, Je'Bria Green, Sandra Hoevels and Elizabeth Fuerst, and their favorite teammate Madeline Dean before the match.
South Dakota moves to 27-1, with an undefeated 16-0 Summit League record. The Coyotes will be the No. 1 seed in the Summit League Tournament and will receive a first-round bye. Purdue Fort Wayne goes to 17-13, 11-5 in the League. The Mastodons will be the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 seed Oral Roberts.
The South Dakota offense was clicking all afternoon, as the Coyotes hit .387 on the day. Purdue Fort Wayne's offense was also working in the back-and-forth first set, as there were seven tie scores and two lead changes throughout. The 'Dons and Yotes reached a 22-22 stymie, but USD took two in a row and took the frame.
A 5-0 run midway through the second set put USD up 15-9, burning both Mastodon timeouts by that point. Katie Crowe had a pair of kills in a push back, but the Coyotes' lead was too much. In the third set, the Mastodons took a 15-12 lead over the Yotes with a 6-1 run spurred by Crowe. She had two kills from the back row, while Sydney Boerst, Sandra Hoevels and Elizabeth Fuerst blocked two attempts. Fuerst and Sidney Schiller also had a kill each in this run. South Dakota answered with a 6-1 run of their own to go up 18-16 and take the lead for good. The Coyotes took the last three points of the match.
Madelyn Wurster led the Mastodons with 11 kills. Crowe and Rachael Crucis had 12 digs each.
The Mastodons will play in their final Summit League Tournament next weekend, with their first match coming on Friday at 8 p.m. ET against Oral Roberts.
