AKRON, Ohio - Despite Anna Lappenküper's career-high 22 points, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team dropped its second game at the Akron Classic to Kent State 75-67 on Saturday (Nov. 16).
Both offenses clicked in the first quarter, with both teams shooting above 50 percent from the floor, while the second quarter featured a defensive battle, as neither team shot better 27 percent. The Mastodons held Kent State to just three buckets in the second quarter, and did not allow a 3-pointer. Hannah Albrecht cut the Kent State lead to three after a made layup, but the Golden Flashes took a four-point lead into the locker room after a made free throw.
The 'Dons dropped three treys in the third quarter, but Kent State extended its lead to 12 on a 3-pointer with 2:16 to go. Michelle Nicholls dropped a pair of free throws and Lappenküper drained a layup to cut the lead to eight.
In the final quarter, the Mastodons cut the lead to just three with a layup from Lappenküper with 2:38 to go, but Kent State went on a run to keep the 'Dons at bay. Lappenküper picked up her 21st and 22nd points of the afternoon on a jumper with five seconds to go.
Albrecht played all 40 minutes and netted a total of 11 points. The Mastodons forced 22 Kent State turnovers, compared to their own 12. Lappenküper had five of Purdue Fort Wayne's 11 steals. Sh'Toya Sanders had eight points and eight rebounds in 22:30 on the floor.
The Mastodons fall to 2-3, while Kent State improves to 3-1. Purdue Fort Wayne is back in action on Thursday (Nov. 21) when Southeast Missouri comes to town for a 7 p.m. tip.
