Mastodons' Late Charge Not Enough Against SEMO
11/21/2019 9:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite a double-double from Sh'Toya Sanders, Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball dropped a nonleague game against Southeast Missouri 58-48 on Thursday (Nov. 21) in the Gates Sports Center.
Sanders had 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in the contest. She also chipped in four blocks, which ties her season-high.
The Redhawks were up 17 with 7:00 remaining before the Mastodons went on a 9-0 push that cut the lead to eight. Hannah Albrecht dropped a trey and a pair of free throws for five of her team-high 13 points. Shayla Sellers picked up an offensive rebound moments later and dumped a put-back through the hoop. Less than a minute later, Sanders grabbed an offensive board, stepped out and drained a jumper. This put the score at 49-41 SEMO. The lead was diminished to as little as seven in the fourth quarter after Sanders banked in a layup with 0:33 to go.
It looked as though the tides had turned in the Mastodons favor in the second quarter, when Anna Lappenküper hit 3 of 4 3-pointers to cut SEMO's lead to six just before halftime. She also had a steal, an assist and rebound in the second. The 'Dons edged the Redhawks with a 16-11 second quarter.
Purdue Fort Wayne outscored SEMO in second-chance points 14-8. The Mastodons fall to 2-4, while SEMO improves to 4-1. The Mastodons are back in action on Sunday (Nov. 24) when they welcome Heidelberg at 12:30 p.m. for the first game of a double-header with the men's team. They will play Ohio Northern with tip following the women's game.
