Mastodons Thump Heidelberg 82-55
11/24/2019 2:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a pair of standout performances from Shayla Sellers and Hannah Albrecht, Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball routed Heidelberg 82-55 in the Gates Sports Center on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 24).
Sellers played her best game as a Mastodon, as she recorded 15 points on a perfect 3 of 3 shooting performance. She paired her three buckets with seven points coming on seven attempts at the charity stripe. Her offense was not the only stellar aspect of her game, as she finished the day with eight steals, which is the second-most in a single game in program history.
Albrecht played a game-high 39 en route to a career-high 22-point effort on 9 of 16 shooting (56.2 percent). She also drained four from 3-point land in six tries for a 66.7 percent clip. Her game didn't end there though, as she also recorded five rebounds, five assists and a steal.
The first half was all Mastodons, as they dominated from the opening tip. Purdue Fort Wayne took a 22-7 lead after the first quarter as Albrecht drained a jumper in the paint as the clock expired. The lead expanded to as large as 33 in the first half, when Michelle Nicholls dropped in a jumper for two of her 15 points with 1:07 left in the half. The 'Dons took a 48-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half evened out, as the Student Princes scored 37 of their 55 points in the third and fourth quarters. By this point, however, the game was well out of reach.
The Mastodons shot 31 of 64 for the day (48.4 percent) and 11 of 18 (61.1 percent) from deep. They also had a 90 percent day (9 of 10) from the charity stripe. The Mastodons had five in double-figures: Albrecht (22), Sellers (15), Nicholls (15), Jazzy Hughes (14) and Sh'Toya Sanders (10). This is the first time the 'Dons have had five in double-figures since November 6, 2018.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 3-4, while Heidelberg remains 2-1, as this was an exhibition contest for the Student Princes. The 'Dons are back in action on Friday, November 29 when they travel to the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament. They will play Texas Tech in the opening round at 7:30 ET on Friday, and either Monmouth or San Diego on Saturday.
