PHOENIX – Jarred Godfrey finished with a career-high 28 points to help the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons defeat Grand Canyon 71-60 on Saturday (Nov. 30) evening at GCU Arena. The contest was part of the Summit League/WAC Challenge.
The Mastodons controlled the majority of the contest with Grand Canyon's final lead coming at 7-6. It was a 9-9 game when the 'Dons went on a 16-3 run. Godfrey had six points in the stretch with three reserve players, Deonte Billups, DeMierre Black and Tionne Rollins, each adding field goals.
GCU seemed to be creeping back in the contest in the second half, advancing within four at 39-35. Godfrey had the answer, however. He followed with a three and a layup. Billups had an assist and a steal in Godfrey's 5-0 burst. It forced Grand Canyon head coach Dan Majerle to call a timeout with 16:16 left in the game.
The Mastodons finished the game shooting a season-high 55.1 percent (27-of-49) while limiting Grand Canyon to 40.0 percent (20-of-50). It is the third straight game the 'Dons have held their opponent to 40 percent or below shooting.
The 'Dons led 36-28 at the half with the final two points coming at the buzzer on a thunderous one-handed put back dunk by Dylan Carl.
