INDIANAPOLIS – DeMierre Black led Purdue Fort Wayne with a career-high 17 points on Saturday (Dec. 14) afternoon but it wasn't enough in a 74-65 loss at IUPUI.
The 'Dons had a season-high 16 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Jaguars 43-34 but could never rally back after IUPUI took a lead in the first half. Brian Patrick and Black each had eight points in the first half to lead the Mastodons. The 'Dons went to the break down 42-30. At first it appeared it would be a nine-point halftime deficit but a Mastodon 3-pointer just before half that was initially called good, was ruled to come just after the shot clock went off. Both clubs had gone to the locker room when the officials overturned the call. This caused both teams to return to the floor to play the final five-tenths of a second.
Each time the Mastodons put a run together in the second half, IUPUI had an answer. The 'Dons cut it to seven at 46-39 five minutes into the second half only to see the Jaguars score the next five points. Purdue Fort Wayne made it a 53-48 game with nine minutes left only to see IUPUI answer with another five points. It was a five-point deficit again with 5:29 left but four IUPUI points followed to put the game away for the Jaguars.
IUPUI shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) while the Mastodons shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67). Marcus Burk had a game-high 22 points for the Jaguars.
Black's 17 points gave him a career high for a second straight game. He was 7-of-12 from the floor with four assists and two steals. He was one of three Mastodons in double-digits. Jarred Godfrey added 14 points while Brian Patrick totaled 12.
Purdue Fort Wayne held a 23-7 edge in bench points.
The Mastodons fall to 7-7. IUPUI improves to 4-8. The 'Dons take the bulk of the week off for finals before returning to the court on Sunday (Dec. 22) at Iowa State.
