BROOKINGS, S.D. – Perhaps the final matchup between Purdue Fort Wayne's John Konchar and South Dakota State's Mike Daum saw them both at the peak of their powers on Thursday (Feb. 21) evening. In the end it was Daum's Jackrabbits that prevailed 92-83 after eight consecutive SDSU points to close the contest.
Daum finished with 38 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks. Konchar totaled 27 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Konchar will enter Thursday's contest at Gates against North Dakota 10 points shy of 2,000 for his career.
The 'Dons led by as many as nine points in the first half after a 12-0 run midway through the first gave the 'Dons the lead. Marcus DeBerry had back-to-back threes in the push after Konchar scored the first six points.
The visitors pushed their lead back to nine points at 64-55 on a 3-pointer by Matt Weir with 15:52 left. But just over three minutes later the Jackrabbits would earn their first lead of the second half at 67-65 thanks to a 12-1 run.
Matt Holba made a 3-pointer and Dylan Carl followed with a layup to make it a one-point game at 84-83 with 1:46 left. However, down the stretch the Jackrabbits would score eight straight to seal the contest. Daum finished with 19 points in the second half. Daum became the Summit League's all-time leading rebounder in the contest.
Holba had 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists for the Mastodons.
South Dakota State improves to 22-7 (12-2 Summit). The Mastodons are now 17-12 (9-5 Summit). The Mastodons return home on Thursday for the first of two final regular season games at the Gates Sports Center. First up is a visit by North Dakota in a 7:30 p.m. tip as Konchar looks for his 2,000th career point.
