Vargas and Dickmann Lead Mastodons Past Lindenwood in Five Sets

SAINT CHARLES, Mo. - Pelegrin Vargas and Alex Dickmann led the No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team past Lindenwood in a 3-2 victory (31-33, 25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10) in Hyland Arena. With the win over the Lions, the Mastodons have clinched a home match for the MIVA Tournament quarterfinal on April 13.
Vargas had eight kills in the extended first set on Saturday (March 30). The Lions used 9.5 team blocks in the opener to limit what the Mastodons could do offensively. Lindenwood lead for the majority, but the 'Dons used a 3-0 run including two Vargas kills to lead 23-22. Purdue Fort Wayne had four set point opportunities but did not capitalize on them, as Lindenwood took the set after a block from Diego Negron.
In the second and third sets, the Mastodons used .417 and .538 hitting respectively to march past the Lions. Vargas had three of his four aces in these two frames, while Dickmann had 13 kills on 18 swings. Purdue Fort Wayne never trailed in the third set.
In the fourth, Lindenwood held the Mastodons to .091 hitting to tie the match at two sets each. Negron had six kills to lead the Lions.
The decisive fifth went to Purdue Fort Wayne thanks to .583 hitting. The Lions led 10-9, but the Mastodons finished the match on a 6-0 run. In this stretch, there were two kills from Vargas and one from both Richie Diedrich and Tomas Gago.
Vargas finished with 21 kills, nine digs, six assists, four blocks and four aces. Dickmann had 19 kills on .394 hitting and an ace, while Tony Price had seven kills and a .300 percentage. Michael Keegan had 48 assists, eight digs and two kills. Kolbie Knorr had eight digs as well.
The Mastodons improve to 16-9, 8-4 MIVA while Lindenwood falls to 9-16, 5-7 MIVA. Purdue Fort Wayne has two more MIVA matches left in the regular season with Ohio State on Thursday (April 4) and McKendree on Saturday (April 6). A win over either of these teams will guarantee the Mastodons to be the No. 3 seed in the MIVA Tournament.
