Mastodons Earn Top Five Finish at Gary Freeman Invitational

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team jumped one spot on the final day of the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational, as the Mastodons finished in fifth place with a 54-hole score of 923. The 'Dons finished up their second round with a 311 and ended the week on a high note with a third-round 302.
Hosted by Bethune-Cookman, the par-72 LGPA International - Hills Course was played at 6,984 yards. Augusta captured the team title with a 54-hole score of 878. McCullough Pickens also of Augusta earned medalist honors with a two-day score of even-par 216.
The Mastodons finished four shots back of fourth place Sacred Heart and six back of third place Robert Morris. As a team, the 'Dons recorded the second most birdies for the week, 33, behind only tournament champion Augusta.
Callahan Elzey capped off his tournament with a pair of 78's as he led the way in a tie for 18th place with a two-day score of 229. Zach Schroeder carded the second lowest round by anyone in the tournament on Friday, shooting a 3-under-par 69, en route to finishing tied for 21st with a 230. Schroeder recorded six birdies on the round, including going 4-under-par on the back nine. His nine birdies of the tournament tied him for the overall lead.
Zac Turi tied for 30th as he shot rounds of 79 and 78 to finish the tournament with a 234. One stroke back in a tie for 35th was Eric Brinker with scores of 78 and 77. Clark Tiller rounds out the team scoring in a tie for 55th place, shooting rounds of 76 and 84 to card a 240.
Individually, Luke Miller was one of seven golfers to shoot par or better during the final round as she carded an even-par 72 as he recorded five birdies during the round. Miller finished the tournament tied for the lead with nine birdied as he tied for 30th place with a 234. One shot back in a tie for 35th is Parker Deakyne with rounds of 81 and 79.
Purdue Fort Wayne has nearly a month off before returning to action April 1 and 2 at the Butler Spring Invitational in Indianapolis.
