
Zach Schroeder Tied For Fourth, Mastodons in Fifth at League Championship

NEWTON, Kan. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf shot an opening round 299 at the Summit League Championship for a fifth-place end to day one. Zach Schroeder led the Mastodons with a one-under 71, tying for fourth place in the field.
Schroeder had the best average of any player on par-4's through the first 18 holes, with four birdie-3's to average 3.80. The reigning Summit League champion started his day with back-to-back birdies. Three more birdies would come on the back nine to give him a one-under 35 coming into the clubhouse. He is three strokes back of the individual leader, South Dakota State's Jared Nicolls (68).
Callahan Elzey shot a 73 with three birdies on the day to finish tied for seventh overall. His even 36 on the front nine was highlighted by birdies on the par-5 fourth and par-4 eighth. His back nine started with a double-bogey, but he rebounded with eight straight holes with par or better. He birdied the par-5 16th.
Clark Tiller followed behind with a 77 for T-27th place, birdieing a par-5 on both nines. He was one of only six student-athletes to have a total of -2 or better on the par-5's in the opening round. Josh Keating tied for 31st with a 78. He birdied three holes, shooting a 39 on both sides. Eric Brinker rounded out the Mastodons with an 80. He birdied the par-5 16th.
The Mastodons' 299 is nine strokes back of Oral Roberts and South Dakota State, who lead the field at 290. Denver (292) and South Dakota (298) will also head into day two with small leads over the 'Dons.
The final two rounds of the League Championship will be played on Monday (April 29), instead of the originally scheduled single rounds on both Monday and Tuesday, due to forecasted storms in Kansas on Tuesday. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. CT on both holes one and 10.
