Purdue Fort Wayne Drops Regular Season Finale to McKendree 3-2

LEBANON, Ill. - No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball fell to the McKendree Bearcats 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-13) in the regular season finale on Saturday (April 6). Pelegrin Vargas reached 1,000 career kills with 25 in the Statham Sports Center.
The Mastodons leaned heavily on Vargas and Alex Dickmann for the night, as they finished with 25 and 21 kills respectively. Vargas hit .300 and Dickmann hit .325. This is the first duo to have 20 kills each in a Purdue Fort Wayne match since 2015 when Alex Harthaller and Andrew Sellan did so. Tomas Gago pitched in 11 kills and a .318 clip. Purdue Fort Wayne had 67 kills compared to McKendree's 51 on the Bearcats' home floor.
Michael Keegan paced the Mastodon offense with 60 assists, which was a season-high. Dickmann finished with a double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs, his first since 2017. Tony Price had two aces and 12 digs.
The Mastodons led the way early in the first set, as the Bearcats did not hold the lead to the end until they took it at 18-17. A 4-0 McKendree run put the set out of reach.
Purdue Fort Wayne took the second and third sets thanks to .481 and .593 hitting. Vargas and Dickmann both had 10 kills between the two sets. Richie Diedrich had three of his six blocks in the second set.
The McKendree defense took the fourth and fifth sets by holding the 'Dons to .057 and .042 hitting.
The Mastodons fall to 16-11, 8-6 MIVA, while McKendree improves to 12-12, 7-7 MIVA. The Bearcats earned home court advantage for the MIVA Tournament quarterfinal with the win. Purdue Fort Wayne had already secured the No. 3 seed with a home match for the quarterfinal. The Mastodons will face Lindenwood on Saturday (April 13) at 7 p.m.
