INDIANAPOLIS – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer, men's volleyball, men's golf and women's golf programs have each been honored with the NCAA Division I Public Recognition Award for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR), as announced Thursday (May 2) by the NCAA.
To earn the honor, a program must post multiyear APRs ranked in the top 10 percent of all Division I teams in the respective sports. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
The Mastodons have the only women's soccer team in the Summit League to earn the honor. The Mastodons are joined by IUPUI and Valparaiso as the only women's soccer teams in the state of Indiana to receive the APR honor. This is the first time in program history the Mastodon women's soccer team has earned the Public Recognition Award.
Men's volleyball picks up the honor for the second time in program history. They are the only team in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and one of only seven teams in the entire nation to earn the honor this season.
The men's golf team earns the honor for the second straight year. Overall, it is the team's fifth time being recognized since 2005. They are one of four men's golf teams in the Summit League to receive the honor.
The 'Dons are one of six Summit League women's golf teams to earn the honor this year. This is the seventh straight year, and eighth time overall, that Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf has been recognized.
The Mastodons' three APR awards for Summit League sponsored sports (women's soccer, men's golf and women's golf) puts them in a tie with North Dakota and Oral Roberts for most APR awards by a league member this year.
"Congratulations to these student-athletes and coaches as well as the staff and faculty who support their academic efforts," Purdue Fort Wayne Director of Athletics Kelley Hartley Hutton said. "I am proud of our department's culture which places high value on academic excellence."
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 8.
