Mastodons Split Second Day of Dunn Hospitality Tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - On Saturday (Sept. 14), Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball split its final two matches of the Dunn Hospitality Tournament with a win over Eastern Illinois and a loss to Middle Tennessee.
GAME 1
Purdue Fort Wayne topped Eastern Illinois in four sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-9, 25-20) in the morning match behind a stringent Mastodon defense that held the Panthers to .092 hitting.
Madelyn Wurster finished with a team-high 14 kills with a .458 hitting percentage. Sidney Schiller and Elizabeth Fuerst both followed behind in double-digits, tallying 11 kills each. Fuerst hit .455.
The Mastodons used a 7-1 run in the first set to go up 16-10, which included three straight kills from Wurster and Katie Crowe. The 'Dons ended the set on an 8-2 run, capped off by a kill from Wurster.
In the second set, the 'Dons had a four point stretch to go up 20-19, but Eastern Illinois rattled off four of the last five points to even it at one set apiece.
The third set was all 'Dons, as they took the first four and the last five points of the frame, and had a 10-2 in the middle. Purdue Fort Wayne hit .524 in the third set.
In the fourth, the Mastodons used a 5-0 run, finished off by a kill from Schiller to take a lead they would hold. A subsequent 6-1 run put the set and match away.
Rachael Crucis led the defense with 24 digs. Sydney Boerst had five blocks.
This match moved Purdue Fort Wayne to 3-6, and Eastern Illinois to 0-8.
GAME 2
In the afternoon game, Purdue Fort Wayne fell to Middle Tennessee in five sets (25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-7).
The first set was one of runs, but MTSU had the four-point run that gave the Blue Raiders the opening frame.
The Blue Raiders had an early 9-7 lead in the second set before the Mastodons had a four-point swing. Purdue Fort Wayne had a three-point run later on in the set that put the 'Dons out of reach at 22-17. Purdue Fort Wayne led the third set 11-4, forcing an MTSU timeout. The 'Dons held a 20-14 lead, but the Blue Raiders had an 11-1 run to close the set.
Purdue Fort Wayne and Middle Tennessee were tied at nine in the fourth set before the Mastodons ran off a 16-6 stretch. Crucis finished the set on an ace.
MTSU started the fifth 7-1, putting the match out of reach. The Blue Raiders finished the match on a 3-0 run.
Crowe had a double-double with 12 kills and 21 digs. Boerst had nine blocks, including two solo. The team racked up 17 total blocks, the most since September of last season.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-7, while Middle Tennessee improves to 2-7. The Mastodons are back in action on Tuesday at Eastern Michigan.
