Women's Soccer Plays Southern Illinois and Eastern Illinois

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team stays at home at the Hefner Soccer Complex for a match up against the Southern Illinois Salukis on Friday, September 6 at 7 p.m. and then go back on the road to Eastern Illinois for a match at 4 p.m.

Scouting the Mastodons (1-1-1, 0-0-0 Summit League)
Purdue Fort Wayne is coming off of a 1-0 shutout win Chicago State (0-4). Hannah Kroger scored the lone goal for 'Dons and was assisted by Kayla Wisniewski. Goalkeeper Lorah Pund helped keep the Cougars scoreless by saving the two shots on goal from Chicago State. The Mastodons faced off against the Robert Morris Colonials prior to Chicago State and ended with a tie 1-1. Morgan Reitano scored the 'Dons' goal at the 16th minute. The Colonials came back at the 79th minute with a goal of their own by Sheridan Reid. After 20 minutes of overtime, the Mastodons and Colonials ended the game with a draw.
Scouting the Salukis (3-2-0, 0-0-0 Missouri Valley Conference)
The Salukis last faced off against IUPUI on September 1, falling 2-0. SIU led the match in saves 8-3 and corner kicks 6-4. Before Southern Illinois met IUPUI, the Salukis won against the Belmont Bruins 1-0. The lone goal was scored by SIU's Liz Brechtel and assisted by Andrew Rodriguez. During that match, goalkeeper Dariana Mihalache saved six shots on goal while the Bruins only saved one.
Scouting the Panthers (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Ohio Valley Conference)
Eastern Illinois is coming off a 2-1 loss to Kansas City. Nicoletta Anuci scored for the Panthers at the 77th minute with a right-footed shot to the upper right corner of the goal. Eastern Illinois goalkeeper, Sara Teteak, led the Panthers in saves 10-1. Before the Panthers took on the Kangaroos, they played Ball State, but lost 6-0.
Beginning of a New Rivalry.
This will be the first time Purdue Fort Wayne will be meeting Southern Illinois. The Salukis are in their first year of the women's soccer program.
Series History vs. Eastern Illinois
Eastern Illinois leads the overall series 3-1, and won last season's matchup 4-3 in Fort Wayne. In 2017, the 'Dons traveled to Eastern Illinois, and Eastern Illinois came out on top with a score of 3-2. The one win for the Mastodons came on August 21, 2016, when the 'Dons took down the Panthers in a 2-0 shutout. Chloee Foor scored a goal in the second half of the match.
New Faces. Big Moves.
Two new Mastodons are making names for themselves early in the season. Morgan Reitano and Eliese LaCourt have both scored a goal in nonconference matchups for the Mastodons. LaCourt scored the only goal against Youngstown State and collected her first goal as a Mastodon. Morgan Reitano also scored the only goal against Robert Morris and earned her first collegiate career goal.
Wisniewski in the Books
Kayla Wisniewski had a successful season in 2018. In her first year as a Mastodon, Wisniewski made it into the record books for five separate categories. She is currently tied for seventh with three game-winning goals in a career and in a single-season. She is also tied for sixth with 1.00 points per game and fifth with eight goals. Wisniewski also ranks seventh overall with an average of 0.42 goals per game and fifth overall with 19 points earned in a single-season.
Party at the Pitch
The women's soccer team will host Valparaiso at 7 p.m. on September 13 at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The men's team will face off against Belmont at 5 p.m. before the women's game. Starting at 4:30 p.m., there will be free food for students and food trucks for spectators and admission is free.
