FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team ended its Friday night (Sept. 6) contest against Southern Illinois with a 1-1 draw at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The Mastodons struck early and hard, dominating the early portion of the match. The 'Dons led the first half of regulation in shots 14-0, and finding the net in just 4:39 from the opening kick. The goal came on a Kailyn Wade strike from Cesiley LaCourt. It was Wade's first goal and LaCourt's first assist of the season.
After the one-sided first half, the Salukis fought back, scoring their only goal on their first shot of the match. Liz Brechtel snuck the ball past the Mastodons' defense thanks to assists from Emma Spotak and Andrea Rodriguez.
Both overtime periods were primarily in favor of the Mastodons, as they put seven shots on the board, compared to SIU's three. Purdue Fort Wayne had a pair of shots on goal in the second overtime that could have been the winning shot, but Saluki keeper made two of her 13 saves. Neither team could find the golden goal, however, and the two teams ended the night in a tie.
The Mastodons had a 30-9 shot advantage and had the upper hand with 10 corner kicks to the Salukis' three. Kayla Wisniewski had a team-high six shots.
The 'Dons move to 1-1-2 to stay at .500, while SIU moves to 3-2-1. Purdue Fort Wayne is on the road on Sunday (Sept. 8) at Eastern Illinois before returning home on Friday, September 13 for Party at the Pitch.
