Mastodon WBB Returns Home for South Dakota State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball will return to the Arnie Ball Court in the Gates Sports Center on Sunday (Jan. 12) for another Summit League game. This time, it's the South Dakota State Jackrabbits visiting the Mastodons for the final time as Summit League foes.

South Dakota State is 12-6, and a perfect 4-0 in Summit League play. The Jackrabbits have beaten Omaha, Oral Roberts, Western Illinois and Denver so far in the League schedule. SDSU is led by Paiton Burckhard, who is averaging just over 14 points per game. In the Jacks' most recent game, Burckhard had 24 points and seven rebounds.

South Dakota State has been a heavy favorite in the all-time series, winning 34 of the 35 meetings. The Mastodons' only win of the series came in 2011, when Purdue Fort Wayne beat SDSU 70-67 in Brookings, South Dakota.

Hannah Hess and Riley Ott both had career-highs in points at Western Illinois on Thursday, January 9. They had 19 points each, while Ott added five assists. Hess' five treys in the game marked a career-high for her as well. Anna Lappenküper and Shayla Sellers both had career-highs with eight rebounds each. Sellers had seven of those eight in the fourth quarter.

In Thursday's game against Western Illinois (Jan. 9), Hannah Hess had three 3-pointers in the span of 71 seconds of game time. She opened the second quarter, knocking in a trey 20 seconds after the opening whistle. 58 seconds later, she hit another one, followed by a third just 13 seconds following. This led the way to nine of her career-high 19 points.

The Mastodons have held 10 out of their 14 opponents to under 50 percent from the floor. The 'Dons held UIC to the lowest output of an opponent this season at 32.7 percent.
Best Offensive Day Since???
Purdue Fort Wayne's game at North Dakota featured the best offense for the Mastodons since December 8, 2017. The Mastodons scored 85 points against the Fighting Hawks with a 55.6 percent shooting night, which were both best against Division I opponents since scoring 91 points on 70.8 percent shooting against Eastern Illinois in 2017.
Dropping Dimes
Hannah Albrecht had a career-high nine assists in the Mastodons' game at North Dakota. Her previous high was six, which she had set twice, but Albrecht passed that before halftime, as she had seven before the break. Her nine was the most since Sierra Bell had nine last season against IU Kokomo.
Free Throws Are Free
Purdue Fort Wayne is top-50 in the country in free throw percentage, cashing in on 74.4 percent of their trips to the charity stripe. The Mastodons are fourth in the Summit League in that category, but only 3.0 percent behind Denver who leads the League.
