1/5/2020 5:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Despite near double-doubles from Sh'Toya Sanders and Hannah Albrecht, Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball dropped a barn-burner at North Dakota on Sunday (Jan. 5) 91-85 in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
Sanders finished with a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds, while Albrecht had 23 points and a career-high nine assists.
Albrecht had the offense running on all cylinders in the first half, as the Mastodons went 16 of 29 from the floor for 55.2 percent with 6 of 9 shots falling from behind the 3-point line. Albrecht had 13 points and seven of her assists by halftime. The Mastodons trailed by nine at 36-27, but ended the half on a 10-3 run. This run featured the 'Dons hitting four of their last five shots, including a Riley Ott 3-pointer, an Albrecht jumper, a Hannah Hess trey, and an Ott layup. This cut the North Dakota lead to just one heading into the locker room.
Ott had 11 of her career-high 18 points in the opening two quarters.
After the break, Anna Lappenküper drained a triple at 48-46 to give the Mastodons their first lead since the first quarter. The Mastodons held this lead for the rest of the quarter. After North Dakota's Lilly Keplin hit a 3-pointer to go up 70-69 with 8:35 left in the game, the Fighting Hawks led the rest of the way. Ott rolled in a layup with 30 seconds to go, but that was as close as the 'Dons would get.
The Mastodons went 14 of 18 from the charity stripe for a 77.8 percent clip on the afternoon. The 'Dons had four in double-figures for points, with Albrecht (23), Sanders (19), Ott (18) and Lappenküper (14).
Purdue Fort Wayne's 85 points was the most scored by a Mastodons team against a Division I opponent since the 2017-18 season when the 'Dons put up 93 on Eastern Illinois. The Mastodons' 55.6 percent shooting was also the best shooting night by the program against a DI foe since that same night, when they hit 70.8 percent of their shots.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-11, 0-2 Summit League, while North Dakota improves to 11-4, 2-0. The Mastodons will take on Western Illinois on Thursday (Jan. 9) in Macomb, Illinois.
