Original Recap
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A little warmth and sunshine was just what the doctor ordered at the end of a long seven-game road swing. IPFW registered four players in double-figures and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 67-61 win over North Florida in Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon.
Junior guard Nick Daniels drilled a triple to open the game, and the Mastodons never trailed. However, the 'Dons did have to hold off the Ospreys down the stretch for their fifth win of the season (5-8).
Daniels and sophomore guard Zach Plackemeier took turns sticking 3-pointers early on to give IPFW a six point advantage.
The Mastodons opened up a 10-point cushion at the 6:30 mark of the first half as junior forward Deilvez Yearby threw down consecutive dunks, making it 28-18.
IPFW held a 14-point lead, but UNF guard Eni Cuka hit a last second triple to draw the Ospreys to within 38-27 at the half.
In the second half, North Florida turned up the defensive heat and began to get into an offensive rhythm.
Consecutive jumpers by Matt Sauey and Germaine Sparkes drew UNF to within two at 50-48.
But each time the Ospreys threatened, IPFW had an answer.
A triple by Plackemeier put the 'Dons lead back to five.
UNF was able to get to within two one more time, but Daniels knocked down his fourth 3-ball of the game, and IPFW sank nine of 10 free throws the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Senior forward David Carson snapped out of a two-game slump to lead the 'Dons with a game-high 16 points.
He was one of four Mastodons to hit for double-digits.
Daniels, with those four 3-pointers, finished with 14, while Plackemeier and Yearby each chipped in 12. Yearby led the Mastodons on the boards with eight rebounds.
Sparkes was the only Osprey in double figures with 13.
IPFW outshot UNF (2-9) 50% to 37.3%, but North Florida won the battle of the boards 34-25.
With the 2008-09 non-conference schedule out of the way, IPFW will return home to host North Dakota State on Wednesday afternoon at 1pm. IPFW and the Community Harvest Food Bank have teamed up to provide fans with admission to the New Year's Eve day game for $1.00 with the donation of a non-perishable food item.
