KNOW YOUR FOE:
• Cleveland State is 0-3 on the season with losses at Toledo (70-61), Ohio (101-46) and Ohio State (67-61).
• Only D'Moi Hodge is averaging in double-digits for the Vikings. He is scoring 10.0 points per game.
• Cleveland State leads the all-time series with the Mastodons 2-1. Purdue Fort Wayne's lone win was one to remember. The 'Dons defeated the Vikings 82-79 on Nov. 25, 2018 in Cleveland when Matt Holba made a 3-pointer at the top of the arc in the final seconds.
• This will be Cleveland State's first visit to Fort Wayne. The 1994 meeting was played in Cleveland and the 2002 game was played in Fort Collins, Colorado.
AND.... WE'RE BACK: Following a pause in basketball activities due to COVID-19 protocols, the 'Dons will return to the court on Dec. 19 against Cleveland State after last playing on Nov. 25. It will be a stretch of 23 days between games. It goes without saying (but we'll say it anyway) this is the longest stretch of days between games in a single season in program history. The last time the 'Dons had double-digit days between games was in 2017 when the 'Dons defeated Ball State in the first round of the CIT on March 15, received a bye in the second round, and then played again in the CIT quarterfinals on March 26. That was a span of 10 off days. In 2009 the 'Dons also had 10 days between games, losing at Gonzaga 90-55 on Nov. 20 and then winning at SIUE 69-64 on Dec. 1.
IS THAT GOOD?: The Mastodons lead the nation in 3-point percentage defense. Okay, it was only one game, but limiting Southeastern Louisiana to 1-of-28 (3.6 percent) is still mighty impressive. Perhaps most amazing is Southeastern Louisiana made their first attempt of the game and then went on to miss their next 27 attempts.
WHAT DID MARK TWAIN SAY ABOUT STATISTICS?: The Mastodons are second in the nation in defensive field goal percentage after limiting Southeastern Louisiana to 30.3 percent shooting. Only Fresno State, who allowed NAIA foe William Jessup to 27.0 percent shooting, ranks better. Fresno State, like the 'Dons, haven't played since Nov. 25.
SOME RANDOM LEAGUE OPENER FACTS HERE:
• The 'Dons hope this weekend will be similar to their start in the Summit League in 2007-08. The Mastodons defeated Southern Utah 74-66 on Dec. 6 and then Kansas City on Dec. 8 79-70 in their first Summit League games. Both games were played at the Memorial Coliseum.
• When the 'Dons played their first Great Lakes Valley Conference games in 1984-85, the Mastodons opened with two losses. Falling 75-58 at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 10 and 69-58 at Lewis on Jan. 12.
• While not a new league... when the 'Dons opened Division I play as an independent on Nov. 16, 2001 they did so with an 82-73 loss to Morehead State.
ARE YOU NEW HERE?: The 'Dons saw multiple new additions make an impact against Southeastern Louisiana.
• Loyola Chicago transfer Jalon Pipkins finished with a team-high 18 points including the game-winning basket with 12 seconds left in overtime.
• St. Bonaventure transfer Bobby Planutis had 14 points, 12 coming after halftime.
• Junior college transfer Demetric Horton scored 11 points in his Division I debut.
• Ra Kpedi, who redshirted last season after transferring from Vermont, scored seven points with six rebounds in 25 minutes.
STAYING FRESH: A pair of true freshmen made their debut against Southeastern Louisiana.
• Johnathan DeJurnett played five minutes and recorded one block.
• Jarvis Walker notched 21 minutes. He didn't take a shot from the floor, but scored his first collegiate points on two free throws with less than a second left in overtime to put the 'Dons up four.
GOTTA BE EXTRA: The Mastodons' overtime win in the opener was their first overtime game since an 85-79 loss to Omaha on Jan. 24, 2019. Jon Coffman is 7-3 in overtime game as the Mastodons' head coach.
THE NEED FOR THREES: Three additions to the Mastodons this year have a track record of connecting from long range at the college level. Bobby Planutis owns a 36.9 career 3-point percentage mark. As a freshman at Mt. Saint Mary's Planutis made 33-of-67 for a 49.3 percentage. Sophomore Bryce Waterman made 104 3-pointers at Pensacola State Junior College last season. Junior Demetric Horton connected on 43.0 percent from 3-point range at Independence Community College last year.
MORE BLOCKS THAN A TWITTER TROLL: Dylan Carl owns 93 career blocks. He is one block away from moving into the top five in program history. Fifth place Sean Gibson (1989-93) had 94 blocks. In fourth place is Brent Calhoun (2012-17) with 109. Carl and Calhoun were teammates in 2016-17.
