Riley Ott Scores 20 Points in Loss at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Despite 20 points from Purdue Fort Wayne sophomore Riley Ott, the Mastodons dropped their final non-league contest at Evansville 70-60 on Saturday (Dec. 5).
Ott led the way in the scoring column, but freshman Jaida Wolfork continued her rebounding success in the second game of her career. She has grabbed 10 boards in back-to-back games, and is the first Mastodon freshman to do so in at least 10 years.
Ott did a little bit of everything, with a final line of 20 points, three rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.
The Mastodons started out with the lead, going up 10-4 in the first quarter. Ott knocked in a pair of free throws and a layup and Hannah Hess hit two triples, both off assists from Ott. Hess finished the game with 12 points. The Purple Aces ended the opening quarter on a 7-0 run to take a lead they would not give up for the rest of the game.
Evansville got what it needed out of its two leading scorers, as Abby Feit and A'Niah Griffin both scored 20 points. Feit scored nine points in the second quarter, which is when Evansville expanded its lead to 13.
The Mastodons were even with Evansville in the third quarter, using nine points from Ott for a 19-19 period. In the fourth, the 'Dons mounted a comeback that fell just short. The 'Dons cut the UE lead to five after Krisen Hunt hit a pair of freebies with 1:38 to go. Sierra Bell scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, with 14 of her 16 coming in the second half.
Purdue Fort Wayne pulled down 17 offensive rebounds compared to Evansville's seven for 11 second chance points. The 'Dons committed just nine turnovers, the fewest since February of 2019. They forced Evansville into 22 turnovers, leading to 28 points off turnovers.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-2 while Evansville moves to 1-1. The Mastodons are back in action next weekend, December 12 and 13, at Horizon League favorite IUPUI. The women's basketball team is set to be the first Mastodon team to play in a Horizon League contest since the 'Dons joined the league on July 1, 2020.
