'Dons Take Down Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 3-1

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The hot weather didn't stop Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball from taking down the Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Gallitos 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-12, 25-13) in San Juan on Tuesday (March 10).
Set One
The Mastodons started off set one trailing the Gallitos 3-0. Two kills by Rico Wardlow and a kill by Pelegrin Vargas launched the 'Dons to a 6-5 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 5-1 run, forcing Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras to call a timeout. Jon Diedrich closed out the set with his second kill of the match. The Mastodons kept the Gallitos at a .091 hitting percentage in the set.
Set Two
Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras came out swinging in set two with a 5-1 run. Two back-to-back aces by Vargas were able to help the Mastodons take the lead 9-8.The lead was short-lived as the Gallitos finished set two 25-17.
Set Three
In set three, the 'Dons opened with a 5-0 lead. Richie Diedrich and Jon Diedrich contributed a kill each and Wilmer Hernandez had a ace during the scoring run. Purdue Fort Wayne had their biggest scoring run of six straight points after two errors by the Gallitos and a Diedrich brothers block, escalating the lead 20-9. Tomas Gago rounded out set three with a kill from Sean Califf. The Mastodons out-hit the Gallitos .500 to -.154.
Set Four
The Gallitos couldn't come back in set four as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons took the lead 16-9 after a 5-0 run. Jon Diedrich had two back-to-back aces and a kill, helping the 'Dons maintain their lead. After a bad set by David Vasquez from Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, the Mastodons finished the set 25-13.
