FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Youngstown State women's volleyball team defeated Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday night (Oct. 30) 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 27-25) on the Arnie Ball Court.
The Mastodons, led by Katie Crowe (18 kills) and Madelyn Wurster (18 kills), took the first set after using a 7-1 run late in the frame. Sidney Schiller picked up an ace in this stretch.
Youngstown State, which got 23 kills from its star freshman Paula Gursching, took set two after earning five of the last seven points of the set. Purdue Fort Wayne led 17-13 in set three after a kill from Schiller, but YSU went on a 7-2 run to close the set and go up 2-1.
The Mastodons used a 7-2 stretch to come back in set four from down four to take a 23-22 advantage. From this point, however, Youngstown State finished the set on a 5-2 stretch.
Crowe and Wurster led the team offensively with 18 kills each, while Molly Mirabelli joined them in double-figures with 10. Mirabelli and Wurster had seven and six blocks, respectively, while Madison Gates (19), Schiller (18) and Rachael Crucis (10) reached double-figure digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 7-21, 5-10 in the Horizon League. Youngstown State improves to 5-20, 2-12. The Mastodons will welcome Wright State and Northern Kentucky to the Gates Sports Center next week (Nov. 5-6).
