Women's Soccer Season Comes to an End With OT Loss

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The 2021 Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer season came to an end with a 1-0 overtime loss against Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals on Sunday, Oct. 31.
The sixth-seeded 'Dons held their ground against the third-seeded Norse, holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
Each team took four shots in the first half. Purdue Fort Wayne's most dangerous chance in the first came in the 38th minute off a corner kick. A header by Lizzie Haub was knocked away by a Norse defender just inches from going in the goal.
The two teams combined for 22 shots in the second half. Goalkeeper Samantha Castaneda had five saves in the second. The Mastodons' best opportunity to get on the board was in the 81st minute when Kailyn Wade and Morgan Reitano combined for three consecutive shots in the box including one that was on goal but was saved by NKU's Mimi Stines.
The Norse would win the game in the 97th with a goal from Megan Sullivan. The assists were credited to Lily Menssen and Taylor Abbott. Sullivan chipped a shot above the head of Castaneda.
The Norse finished the game with a 19-13 shots advantage and a 7-4 shots on goal advantage. Reitano and Haub led the 'Dons with three shots each. All three of Haub's shots were on goal.
With the loss, the Mastodons finish the season with a 5-8-6 overall record. Northern Kentucky (10-7-2) will face Oakland on Thursday, Nov. 4 in the Horizon League semifinals in Milwaukee, Wis.
