All Smiles as Kasey Lilly Leads Tom Tontimonia Invitational

LAKEWOOD, Ohio - After a shortened opening day of the Tom Tontimonia Invitational, Kasey Lilly of the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team led the field with a 69 (-2) on Monday (Oct. 4).
There were originally 36 holes of action planned for the first day of the tournament, but weather pushed the golfers off the course before the start of round two. Round three will go on as planned on Tuesday (Oct. 5) with tee times beginning at 8:45 a.m.
Lilly, who is coming off a runner-up performance at the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational, is tied for first with Dayton's Kyle Schmidt. Lilly started his day on hole five, going 2-under through five holes. He got a birdie to go on the 566-yard sixth and the 589-yard ninth, both par-5s. After making the turn, he made birdies on 11 and 15 to shoot even on the back nine, concluding his round with five straight pars.
Three shots back of Lilly, Brett Seward is tied for 17th with 18 to play after shooting a 72 (+1). The graduate student turned in three birdies in his opening round, coming on holes four, seven and 12. This included a birdie on the 198-yard par-3 12th hole.
Burke Pitz was back in the lineup for the first time this season, shooting a 75. His round was highlighted by birdies on holes one and nine. After starting on hole seven, he was even through 13 holes after his birdie on one.
Tyler Green fired a 76 for his first round of the tournament, with his only birdie coming on the 590-yard par-5 14th hole. He had 11 pars, and is tied for 54th. Reece Compton rounded out the lineup, firing a 78. He got birdies to fall on the 10th and 16th holes, the latter of which was a 158-yard par-3.
As a team, Purdue Fort Wayne finished the day with the second-best average on par-5 holes, shooting 2-under for the round. The Mastodons are in a tie for fifth overall, tied with Horizon League member Northern Kentucky and DePaul with a score of 292. Purdue Fort Wayne is ahead of five Horizon League programs: Cleveland State (293), Youngstown State (295), Robert Morris (295), Detroit Mercy (299) and IUPUI (302). Of the league teams in the field, the 'Dons only trail Oakland (284) and Green Bay (290). Butler is leading the field with a 283 day one total.
