EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Riley Ott and Shayla Sellers both scored in double-figures on Sunday (Nov. 28), but the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team fell to SIUE 68-56 on the road.
SIUE jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before Ryin Ott scored the first Mastodon points of the night. Audra Emmerson and Amellia Bromenschenkel made free throws before the end of the first quarter, but the Cougars led by a dozen at the first break.
The Mastodons out-scored the Cougars in the second quarter 18-16 thanks to an 8-of-14 period. Sellers, Ryin Ott and Sylare Starks were perfect from the floor for 12 combined points.
Midway into the third quarter, Jazzlyn Linbo laid in a layup off a Cougar turnover, then Sellers made a pair at the free throw line to bring it back within eight. After a quick push from SIUE, Valerie Clark drained a triple with 31 seconds left to cut the lead to nine.
Riley Ott scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter, with eight points coming from the free throw line, where she was perfect.
The Mastodons forced SIUE into 17 turnovers, but committed 21 themselves. The 'Dons also held SIUE to 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from beyond the arc. The difference in the game came on the glass, as SIUE out-rebounded Purdue Fort Wayne 50-33.
The 'Dons were 13-of-15 from the free throw line. Linbo finished with eight rebounds, a season-best for the freshman.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-2, while SIUE improves to the same record. The Mastodons will return to the court again on Friday (Dec. 3) when they visit Wright State.
