EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – It was a battle between two former NCAA Division II conference mates on Wednesday (Dec. 8) evening as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons fell at SIUE 80-59.
The 'Dons made 19-of-20 free throws in the contest. Over the last four games the Mastodons are shooting 66-of-73 (90.4 percent) from the line.
The Cougars started 8-for-9 from the floor and jumped out to an 18-7 lead in the first four minutes. The following four minutes it switched as the Cougars went without a field goal and the 'Dons got back in the contest at 19-15. Then the 'Dons went cold again, missing 13 consecutive shots allowing SIUE to open a 33-17 lead. The cold stretch was halted by a Jalon Pipkins transition reverse layup with 6:29 left in the half.
The Mastodons came out of the second half hot, cutting the 17-point halftime deficit to only eight by scoring the first nine points of the half. It was a Deonte Billups 3-pointer that made it a single-digit game with 17:03 left in the game. However, SIUE responded with a 12-2 stretch to take back control of the contest.
Billups finished with a season-high 18 points thanks to four 3-pointers. It is his fourth game of double-digit points this season and his third in the Mastodons' last four games. Jarred Godfrey continued his streak of scoring in double-digits in every game, finishing with 15 points on Wednesday. Godfrey also added three assists, two blocks and two steals.
