No. 4 Flyers' Offense Too Much For 'Dons in 3-1 Loss

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Freshman Vicente Ibarra continued his stellar play on Friday (Feb. 19) with a career-high 21 kills, but Purdue Fort Wayne's attempt to rally back fell short at No. 4 Lewis 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 16-25, 25-20).
Set One
The Mastodons led most of the way in set one with five two-point scoring runs. The Flyers didn't grab the lead for good until Lewis went on a three-point run with two back-to-back errors by the 'Dons to make the score 22-19. Purdue Fort Wayne led 15-11 in kills in the set, but it wasn't enough and the Flyers took set one 25-20.
Set Two
Ibarra had the first kill in set two, but Kyle Bugee responded with a kill and a service ace of his own, allowing Lewis to take the lead early 4-2. The Flyers maintained control the whole way through and won the frame by seven. Purdue Fort Wayne hit .300 in set two and had 15 kills compared to Lewis' 12 kills.
Set Three
Down 11-9, Mastodons turned the set around with an eight-point scoring run to go up 17-11. Bryce Walker and Ibarra both had two kills during the scoring run. Pelegrin Vargas was on the service line for the run and contributed one ace. Vargas closed out the set with a kill on point 25.
Set Four
Purdue Fort Wayne erased an early 4-1 deficit to tie the set at 10 on a Vargas' second ace of the match. It was a 15-14 Lewis lead when the Flyers earned enough breathing room to close out the set with a 4-1 run.
Notable Purdue Fort Wayne Individual Stats
Vicente Ibarra's career-high 21 kills came on a .368 hitting percentage.
Frederico Santos had 45 assists and one service ace.
Troy Gooch, the current MIVA Defensive Player of the Week, recorded a match-high 14 digs.

Ryan Coenen earned 19 kills and hit.581 with one error.
Kevin Kauling had 42 assists with four blocks
Tyler Mitchem recorded seven kills and two aces.
