‘Dons Close Regular Season With 67-55 Loss to Cleveland State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Four Mastodons finished in double-digits but in the end Cleveland State edged Purdue Fort Wayne 67-55 in the regular season finale for both squads on Saturday (Feb. 20) evening at the Gates Sports Center.
The Mastodons put together an impressive first half, leading by as many as 10 points at 22-12. The 'Dons took a 30-22 lead to the locker room thanks to a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Bobby Planutis. The 22 points the 'Dons allowed was a season-best defensive performance for a half.
The second half saw the trends flip. Cleveland State would shoot 13-of-23 in the half and make 16-of-21 at the line in the frame. While the Vikings would eventually win by double-digits, it was anyone's ballgame at 55-50 with 6:13 left following a jumper by Jalon Pipkins. However the rest of the way the Vikings went 8-of-11 from the free throw line to finish the game on a 12-5 run.
Pipkins had a team-high 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting for the 'Dons. He also had three assists. Planutis pitched in 12 points and seven rebounds. Jarred Godfrey added 10 points with four assists. Demetric Horton also had 10 points.
Cleveland State was led by Tre Gomillion's 18 points. The win gave the Vikings a share of the regular season title.
Purdue Fort Wayne finishes the regular season 7-14 (6-14 Horizon). Cleveland State enters postseason 16-7 (16-4 Horizon).
The 'Dons will find out their opponent in the Horizon League Championship late Saturday (Feb. 20) evening.
