FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball picked up its seventh Horizon League win on Tuesday (Feb. 23), as the Mastodons took a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-17) victory over Cleveland State on the Arnie Ball Court.
Purdue Fort Wayne got offensive and defensive contributions from everyone on the court in the back-and-forth battle. The 'Dons got double-digit kills from Katie Crowe (18), Sidney Schiller (16) and Molly Mirabelli (10) and double-digit digs from Crowe (19), Rachael Crucis (18), Schiller (12) and Madison Gates (11).
As a team, the Mastodons had 11 blocks to Cleveland State's nine. Sydney Boerst had eight of them for the 'Dons.
Early in the match, it looked like the Vikings were going to cruise to another win over the Mastodons. After the 'Dons went up 4-0, CSU tied the set at eight. After trading points until the two teams were knotted at 12, the Vikings took five straight. The 'Dons tied it back up at 19 after Madelyn Wurster got a kill, but Cleveland State went on a 6-1 push to end the frame.
The second set looked as though two completely different teams had taken the court, as the Mastodons only got better as the night went on. The 'Dons trailed 8-4 early, but then rattled off 13 points in 14 tries to go up 17-9. Crowe nearly single-handedly propelled the Mastodons ahead, as she had a kill or block on six consecutive points. The Vikings made a push back, but Crowe finished the set with one of her eight kills in the second.
The third set looked similar to the second, but the 'Dons' got 14 kills spread among five players with none having more than Crowe's four. A key 6-1 run toward the end was highlighted by kills from Boerst and Schiller, and two from Crowe. The Vikings hit a putrid .026 in the third, only getting 10 kills with nine errors.
The Mastodons got points early and often in the fourth, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. The Vikings brought it within one at 17-16, but the 'Dons had the best player on the floor get the momentum back. Crowe picked up a kill, then Schiller, then Boerst and Wurster combined for a block. The 8-2 final push was concluded by a block from Boerst and Mirabelli. The 'Dons hit scorching .457 in the last set.
After sharing the Horizon League Player of the Week honor heading into this week, Crowe won the battle with CSU's Hannah Greene. Greene finished with 17 kills and seven digs compared to Crowe's 18 and 19.
Three Mastodons recorded double-doubles: Crowe (18 kills, 19 digs), Schiller (16 kills, 12 digs) and Gates (48 assists, 11 digs).
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 7-3, 7-3 Horizon League while Cleveland State moves to 5-5, 5-5. The Mastodons still occupy third place in the League standings at this juncture with six regular season matches remaining. The Mastodons will hit the road to face Green Bay next week in a pair of matches. The Phoenix only took one set from Cleveland State in two matches.
