Mastodon WVB Earns 3-1 Road Win at Green Bay
3/1/2021 6:47:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23) road win over the Green Bay Phoenix on Monday (March 1) in the Kress Center.
The Mastodons got balanced contributions from around the court against the Phoenix. Madelyn Wurster and Katie Crowe led the team with 13 kills each. Sydney Boerst was a force at the net, as she finished with eight kills and eight blocks. Rachael Crucis led the defense with 20 digs, and Crowe (16) and Madison Gates (10) joined her with double-figure digs.
The Horizon League's best offense flexed its muscles in the first set, as the 'Dons hit .323 with 13 kills. Gates assisted on 12 of those 13. Crucis paced the back line with seven digs in the first set alone. Molly Mirabelli took advantage of her chances as well, as she had four kills on four swings. She had back-to-back kills, the first of which was a slide behind Gates, the second was straight down the middle. It was a 6-1 run that gave the Mastodons a 22-15 lead that gave the 'Dons some breathing room.
Mirabelli started the second set with the same tone, as she solo blocked Green Bay's Ashley Sledge. The 'Dons went on a 5-0 run to lead 9-3 after Wurster got two kills, Wurster and Boerst combined for a block, then Gates aced the Phoenix twice. After the 'Dons built up a 24-18 lead, Green Bay fought all the way back to a 24-24 stymie. After a Phoenix miscue, Gates went to the right side to Maggie Castleman for the set-winning kill. Wurster went 8-0-9 in the second set.
Green Bay took a 9-2 advantage to start the third, then extended the lead to 13-5. The Mastodons got three points in a row with a kill from Ramei Jackson, an ace from Crowe and a block from Wurster. This led into a Green Bay timeout. Schiller got a kill out of the timeout to cap off a 4-0 run. The Phoenix righted the ship after their two timeouts, needing to just split the points the rest of the way, which they did.
The fourth set was the most entertaining of the bunch, as there were six ties and six lead changes. The 'Dons jumped out to a 7-4 lead after Wurster and Boerst blocked Alexandra Zakutney, who finished the match with a team-high 20 kills. After Crowe got a kill to go up 16-12, Green Bay went on a 7-2 run to lead by one. The 'Dons answered with a 4-0 run of their own, which was concluded by a pair of blocks from Boerst and Gates. The Phoenix held off one set point, but Jackson got the kill that gave the Mastodons the win.
The Mastodons out-hit Green Bay .218 to .199 and out-blocked the Phoenix 10-4.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 8-3, 8-3 Horizon League, while Green Bay falls to 3-8, 3-8 Horizon. These two teams will meet again tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET in the Kress Center.
