Know Your Foe
Green Bay is 3-7 through 10 Horizon League matches this season and is coming off a pair of losses at Oakland. The Phoenix have wins over Northern Kentucky and IUPUI (2). The Mastodons and Phoenix only have two common opponents this season, IUPUI and Cleveland State. The Phoenix swept IUPUI twice, but only took one set off Cleveland State. Green Bay is led by Alexandra Zakutney, who is averaging 2.95 kills per set. Green Bay is running a 6-2, with Addy Karmik and Calli Gentry splitting the setting duties. They are both averaging at least 5.50 assists per set.
The Series
Purdue Fort Wayne and Green Bay have met eight times in history, spanning back to 2001. The two teams have only met once since 2006, which was a 2015 contest at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. The 'Dons have split the two matches in Green Bay with a 3-0 loss in 2002 and a 3-0 win in 2004.
Swinging the Right Way
Madelyn Wurster has the second-highest hitting percentage in the Horizon League at .343 this season. She has the best clip among pin hitters in the League, only trailing Becca Olendorf of UIC, who's hitting .360 on 52 fewer attempts. The only player in the League in the top 10 in hitting percentage with more attempts than Wurster is fellow Mastodon Katie Crowe, who is hitting .308 on 373 swings, good enough for eighth.
Offensive Juggernaut
Purdue Fort Wayne has become an offensive juggernaut in 2021. The Mastodons average 14.55 kills per set, which is first in the Horizon League and 12th in the country. The 'Dons are also 18th in the nation in assists per set (13.39) and 25th in hitting percentage (.275). All those categories lead the Horizon League.
More On That Offense
If Purdue Fort Wayne's hitting percentage stays where it's at, it would be the highest single-season hitting percentage in program history. The current best is .273, which was set in 1997. The highest in the rally-scoring era is .228, set in 2016.
Is That Good?
Purdue Fort Wayne has hit over .300 in five matches this season. The 'Dons are 5-0 in those matches and 26-0 under head coach Steve Florio when they hit at least .300.
Make It A Double
Katie Crowe has six double-doubles this season, with 41 total in her career. She opened the season with a double-double against UIC, then had two straight games with one in a pair of games against Youngstown State. She had two more consecutively against Cleveland State.
Double-Double x3
Purdue Fort Wayne had three players with double-doubles against Cleveland State on February 23: Katie Crowe (18 kills, 19 digs), Sidney Schiller (16 kills, 12 digs) and Madison Gates (48 assists, 11 digs). This was the first time that the Mastodons had three double-doubles in the same game since they got three against Central Arkansas in 2019. In that match, it was Crowe, Gates and Sydney Boerst.
She's a Killer
Katie Crowe leads the Horizon League this season in kills per set with 4.61 and points per set with 5.11. Crowe is also 16th in the country in kills per set and 23rd in points per set.
She's Been Around the Block
Sydney Boerst is 13th in the nation in total blocks among active players with 371. Dana Rettke of Wisconsin is the leading Division I with 548. Boerst is also 16th among active players in career hitting percentage at .324.
Last Time Out
The Mastodons split the week series with Cleveland State, winning in four sets on Tuesday. Three Purdue Fort Wayne players recorded double-doubles: Katie Crowe (18 kills, 19 digs), Sidney Schiller (16 kills, 12 digs) and Madison Gates (48 assists, 11 digs).
