INDIANAPOLIS - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team used a balanced attack to dismantle IUPUI on Monday, February 8. The Mastodons beat the Jaguars 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-14) in the Jungle.
Katie Crowe led all scorers with eight kills, but Sydney Boerst (7), Sidney Schiller (7), Madelyn Wurster (6) and Ramei Jackson (4) all got in on the scoring opportunities. The team also combined for 11 aces, with four Mastodons earning at least two.
Boerst finished the match with seven kills on seven swings.
The middles were making their presence felt early on, as Jackson and Boerst had back-to-back solo blocks to give the Mastodons a 15-12 lead. This was a part of a 4-1 push that gave the Mastodons some room to work with. As the set progressed, IUPUI brought it within one point on several occasions, including 22-21, but Purdue Fort Wayne got kills from Boerst, Madison Gates on a setter dump, and Rachael Crucis to take the 1-0 lead.
Crucis finished off the first set by digging out the hardest IUPUI attack of the set and sending it directly back over. The ball sailed into the back corner of the IUPUI half of the court and dropped in bounds. This capped off the 'Dons .300 hitting percentage for the frame.
Alexandra Traciak led the Mastodons on a 12-1 run in the second set, acing the Jaguars four times in that stretch. This push brought the score from 10-4 in favor of IUPUI to 16-11 for the Mastodons. This hot run continued, as the 'Dons closed the frame with five in a row
IUPUI started the third set ahead 7-4, but Purdue Fort Wayne came storming back, ending the set on a 21-7 run. Within this stretch, the 'Dons had 5-0, 6-0 and 7-1 runs. Crucis had all three of her aces in the third set, the first two of which came back-to-back, and the last of which came on the penultimate point of the night. The Mastodons held the Jaguars to a dismal -.061 hitting percentage in the final stanza.
Schiller was the only player in the match that reached 10 digs.
All told, the match only took 81 minutes. Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 3-2, 3-2 Horizon League while IUPUI falls to 0-5, 0-5. These two teams will meet again tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the Jungle for the second of their two-match series.
